The creative agency makes the message, the media agency buys the places it appears. That sounds like a division of labour, and it is one, but the real difference lies in how they earn and what they measure.
Two different businesses
A creative agency sells hours and ideas. Its revenue rises when more or harder work gets made. Its good year is a year full of projects.
A media agency sells buying power, planning and measurement. Part of its income has historically hung on the volume it places, and even under a fixed fee that volume remains the engine. Its good year is a year with heavy spend.
That is where the tension sits: the creative agency wants a strong idea, the media agency wants reach. In a good process the two reinforce each other. In a bad one each defends its own part and you pay the difference.
What you ask of whom
- The idea, the brand positioning, the campaign and its execution: the creative agency.
- The channel choice, the planning, the negotiation with publishers, and reporting on reach and effect: the media agency.
- What falls in between (social content, performance creative, landing pages): both claim it, and there you have to choose.
Why they rarely sit under one roof
Beyond the different earning logic there is a question of trust. A media agency that both plans the placement and judges its own performance is judging itself. Advertisers who separate the two keep a counterweight. It is also why media reviews and creative pitches usually run separately.
How to make them work together
Put them in the same room at the briefing, not only at execution. A campaign conceived without channel knowledge has to be bent afterwards, and that costs twice: once in production and once in effect.
Also settle who owns the data. Measurement data that stays with the media agency makes every later conversation about results dependent on the party being judged.
How those two relate to each other and to your own team is the question behind Agency ecosystem.
